The beginning

Why was it built here?

Liangyou extends along Yongfu and West Fuxing roads and has retained residential use. The housing register dates it to 1937, a 2023 guide to around 1941, and a 2026 repair account to the 1930s–1940s.[1] [2] [3]

Originally four storeys, the building gained two floors during repairs in 1991. Listed in Shanghai’s fifth historic-building batch in 2015, it underwent conservation work in 2024–2025 covering appearance and residents’ shared facilities.[1] [2] [3]

Look up, then look closer

Details worth a closer look

Corner and street

The wedge-shaped plot spreads the building along two streets. Horizontal window bands and vertical decorative lines balance one another, keeping the corner legible among the plane trees.[1] [2] [3]

Facade details

Green mosaic, pale-brown glazed tiles and wooden handrails record the craftsmanship of the stairs. The photographed “diamond staircase” is residents’ shared space, not an invitation to enter from a street visit.[1] [2] [3]

One building, changing roles

Read the building through time

Captions distinguish photographic dates from publication dates; periods without reliable images are covered in the text.

  1. 1930s–1940s

Residential apartments built; exact dating differs

The housing register gives 1937 and the 2023 guide around 1941; both identify a residential apartment building at the corner.[1] [2] [3]

  2. 1991

Extended from four to six floors

Major repairs raised the original four storeys to six, making the later addition part of today’s corner silhouette.[1] [2] [3]

  3. 2015

Listed as a Shanghai historic building

Inclusion in Shanghai’s fifth historic-building list established ongoing care for the corner mass and details such as the stairs.[1] [2] [3]

  4. 2024–2025

    Conservation repairs and shared-facility improvements

Conservation also improved shared facilities, maintaining appearance and interior craftsmanship while residential use continued.[1] [2] [3]
