The beginning
Why was it built here?
The institution began in 1936 as World School. Tao Xuan founded it at Cai Yuanpei’s invitation under the World Society, at 1788 Middle Huaihai Road, formerly 1836 Avenue Joffre. Early language, music and sporting traditions belong to the school’s history, not proof that this Wukang campus existed in 1936.[1] [2]
It became public in 1956 as Middle Huaihai Road No. 2 Primary School, moved to this address in 1965, and restored the Shanghai World Primary School name in 2008. The school’s own account dates its four-storey building to the 1960s, separating institutional continuity from changes of premises.[1] [2]

Connections along the street
The school adds continuous community education to a street often associated with famous residences. Distinguishing its founding address from this campus reveals how institutions move with a changing city.[1] [2]
