Architecture and use: sources[1] [2]

The beginning

Why was it built here?

Built in 1932, the garden house was designed by Hazzard’s practice. Accounts render its early owner’s name differently; the available records do not securely establish a single complete biography.[1] [2]

The house later accommodated the literary department of Shanghai Film Studio and, in the 1990s, Yongle film organisations. Repairs are recorded in 1996 and 2018; it was listed as a Shanghai historic building in 1999.[1] [2]

Look up, then look closer

Details worth a closer look

Space and facade

Five ground-floor arches form a garden-facing veranda beneath an open upper terrace. Red roof tiles, pink textured render and spiral columns establish the house’s Spanish-style details.[1] [2]

Entrance and details

The veranda deepens the threshold between rooms and garden; openings and railings are finer than the main mass. The photograph is a garden-side frontal view inside the boundary, not an unrestricted street view.[1] [2]

One building, changing roles

Captions distinguish photographic dates from publication dates; periods without reliable images are covered in the text.

  1. 1932

    House completed

Hazzard’s practice combined five arches, an upper terrace and red-tiled roofs in a garden-facing house.[1] [2]

  2. 1996–1999

    Repaired and then listed

Repairs are recorded in 1996; listing followed three years later, placing film-institution use within a conservation framework.[1] [2]

  3. 2018

    Further building repairs

The later repair continued care for the historic house; its garden photographs remain distinct from public-street views.[1] [2]

Image handling and dating

Images come from the archives or image source pages listed beneath each photograph. We resize and compress them to WebP, preserving their original proportions without colourisation or added detail. Grain, blur and scanning marks in historical photographs are retained.

Publication and capture dates are distinct. Monochrome and file images are not automatically historical photographs; captions follow what the source establishes.
