Shanghai Symphony Hall 上海交响乐团音乐厅
复兴中路1380号
Opened on 6 September 2014 as the orchestra’s new home, the venue combines a 1,200-seat main hall and a 400-seat chamber hall for different musical scales. Architect Arata Isozaki and acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota coordinated space, materials and seating details. Proximity to the metro made vibration isolation a central engineering concern.
Brown-red terracotta walls support low, curving roofs likened to an open musical score. Nicknamed “wonton skin”, this is a contemporary building with a restrained street presence. A glazed entrance and exterior frame link garden, forecourt and interior. An isolation system reduces metro vibration, hidden engineering beneath the visible roof and façades.

上海市徐汇区复兴中路1363弄
Clements Apartments, built in 1929 at Lane 1363, later also became known as Yumen Apartments. Five Western-style blocks form a compound originally used for serviced accommodation. Public heritage accounts associate the Belgian Clements with the development, without establishing a named architectural practice. The compound also accommodated leisure and storytelling: a skating rink is recorded in 1936, while in 1954 its restaurant became Donghua storytelling hall and guest rooms became homes. Lodging, recreation and everyday residence belong to the same address. Laundry, windows and courtyards reveal that continuing domestic life.
Pale render contrasts with red brick around windows, corners and vertical strips. Repeated window grids give the façade rhythm. Distinguish the masonry from later air conditioners and screens, then follow how the materials articulate each block. Changing roof heights, curved gables and occasional turret-like volumes give the courtyard depth. The 2013 photograph records these layers alongside domestic fittings. It is a dated observation, rather than a reconstruction of the completed buildings in 1929.

复兴中路1331号
In 1924 James Harry Blackstone developed these apartments on Rue Lafayette. Its 31 suites combined living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens with hotel services. Amenities included dining and dancing rooms, a pool and tennis courts. After 1945 UNRRA used the building as offices, linking it to international postwar relief.
The symmetrical street façade uses projecting curves and layered windows. A central pediment, triangular window details and cornices articulate the substantial mass. The open entrance porch rests on simplified Corinthian columns below a terrace. The street porch and rounded courtyard projection are different views of the building.

复兴中路1327号
Elizabeth Apartments at No. 1327 is also listed as Fuzhong Apartments by the housing bureau. Immediately east of Blackstone, it is a separate building in the street’s apartment sequence. David Thompson’s 2013 photographic account dates it to 1930 and singles out its triangular windows. The reviewed evidence does not establish the original design firm.
The five-storey façade alternates pale render with vertical red-brick strips. Recessed central areas, projecting window edges and long verticals establish its Art Deco rhythm. Rounded vertical end volumes meet the flat parapet, while central windows use angular projections. These differ from Blackstone’s classical pediment and porch next door.

上海市徐汇区复兴中路1360弄1—4号
Nos. 1–4 in Lane 1360 form the southern apartment group of Xinkang Garden, also known as Jubilee Court. The development spans the block between Huaihai and Fuxing Roads: two-storey garden homes occupy its northern section at Lane 1273 Huaihai Road, while four five-storey blocks stand to the south. This profile concerns the Fuxing Road apartments. Designed by Moorhead & Halse, the residential development took shape in the 1930s. Sources differ between 1933 and 1934, so that uncertainty is retained. Xinkang Garden received municipal heritage protection in 1989 and continued in residential use; a 2019–2020 project addressed repairs. Dates and designations for the whole compound should be read alongside each building’s address.
The four apartment blocks are grouped around a courtyard, taller and more concentrated than the northern houses. The 2013 photograph shows horizontal roof edges, grouped steel windows and projecting corner bays. Pale green walls and white trim make these geometric relationships legible. Air conditioners, awnings, drying racks and wires in the photograph document continued occupation. Read the window openings, cornices and main volumes separately from added fittings. These everyday layers deserve attention without being mistaken for the original design.
