The people behind the address

A life in brief

Zhang Shuxun, a son of Zhang Shiming from the Nanxun Zhang family, collected ancient Chinese coins. Shanghai historical research connects this garden with his property purchase in 1931.[1] [2] [3]

Contributions and influence

His name belongs to the history of modern Chinese coin collecting. The later orchestral use is a separate chapter: distinguishing them explains how one address acquired successive cultural roles.[1] [2] [3]

The beginning

Why was it built here?

105 Hunan Road connects coin collector Zhang Shuxun with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Shanghai historical research records Zhang’s purchase of the garden in 1931; the property subsequently changed hands. His collecting belongs to its earlier private history.[1] [2] [3]

The orchestra entered the compound in 1957 through 1708 Middle Huaihai Road. In 1982 its entrance changed to 105 Hunan Road; in 2014 it moved to Middle Fuxing Road. Distinguishing a new entrance from a relocation clarifies its Hunan Road years.[1] [2] [3]

Look up, then look closer

Details worth a closer look

Read from the street

The exterior photograph shows a rounded corner volume, horizontal balcony and openings toward the garden. Roofs and service additions changed over time; the present details do not all represent the 1931 state.[1] [2] [3]

A closer detail

The performance photograph records the final chamber concert at 105 Hunan Road. It shows a later musical use, not Zhang Shuxun’s original drawing room or the house at completion.[1] [2] [3]

Shanghai and the world

Place the address in the city

The move from this address to the Middle Fuxing Road hall traces the orchestra across the city. A former garden residence and a purpose-built hall represent different conditions for rehearsal, performance and listening.[1] [2] [3]

Image handling and dating

Images come from the archives or image source pages listed beneath each photograph. We resize and compress them to WebP, preserving their original proportions without colourisation or added detail. Grain, blur and scanning marks in historical photographs are retained.

Images without a documented capture date are marked undated; publication is not photography. No invented before-and-after view substitutes for a verified historic photograph.
