Zhang Shuxun Residence and Former Symphony Site 张叔驯旧居与上海交响乐团旧址

湖南路105号 · 武康路与永福路之间南侧院落

The garden was purchased by coin collector Zhang Shuxun in 1931. The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra moved into the compound in 1957 and began using its northern Hunan Road entrance in 1982. The orchestra moved to Middle Fuxing Road in 2014.

The broad, low garden house has a semicylindrical sunroom with a solid flat parapet, a long balcony and a later pitched roof. The highlight follows the historic house inside the compound; the street entrance and rehearsal facilities are separate structures.

Midan Apartments 密丹公寓

武康路115号 · 湖南路口东北角

This small corner apartment building became a distinctive Art Deco landmark at Wukang and Hunan. Its address belongs to Wukang Road, and its existing building profile is shared by both street views.

A narrow chamfered corner, grey render, rectangular steel windows and pale vertical ornament. This is the compact building on the north-east corner, diagonally opposite Guofumen.

Guofumen Apartments 国富门公寓

武康路230、232号 · 湖南路口西南角

Built in 1936 to G. Rabinovich’s design, Guofumen stands diagonally opposite Midan. Its ground-floor garages later became shops, while the upper floors remained homes.

Pale horizontal bands, a shallow rounded corner, steel windows and a flat roof distinguish it from Midan’s vertical emphasis. The highlight covers this building alone; the separate Kempton Apartments farther along Wukang are not included.

Hunan Villa 湖南别墅

湖南路262号 · 武康路口西北侧院落

This garden residence acquired several later uses. The Chen Yi and Deng Xiaoping families stayed here in 1949; He Xiaoping’s oral history dates He Zizhen’s move here to 1962. Published accounts differ on some dates, which the full profile keeps distinct.

Rough stone piers and chimney, deep tiled eaves, recessed balconies and an irregular house set inside a walled garden. The outline follows the main house; it does not include neighbouring buildings or the whole garden.
