The connection

The Cathay Hotel opened in Sassoon House in 1929. Its creator, Victor Sassoon, belonged to the British Baghdadi Jewish business world. Today the north building is Fairmont Peace Hotel: a place to trace one family’s role in Shanghai’s commercial and architectural history.

What to look for

The green pyramidal roof above the historic north building. The old hotel name and the building name refer to different things.

Before you go

The facade is visible from the Bund. For interior visits or a heritage tour, consult the hotel’s current visitor information.
