The people behind the address
A life in brief
No. 1 in Lane 100 was home to Wang Yuanhua and Zhang Ke. Wang studied literary theory, intellectual history and The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons. Zhang taught at the Shanghai Theatre Academy and specialised in Shakespeare and translation. The address belongs to the working lives of two scholars.[4] [5]
Contributions and influence
Wang connected classical Chinese literary theory with modern intellectual questions. Zhang introduced Shakespeare and overseas criticism through teaching and translation, including work undertaken with Wang. Their contributions span Chinese literary scholarship and the exchange of drama and ideas across languages.[4] [5]
The beginning
Why was it built here?
Four addresses do not mean four detached villas. The detailed architectural account describes two houses built in 1918, divided into four units with north and south gardens. No. 1 also carries the memory of scholar Wang Yuanhua and his wife Zhang Ke.[1] [2] [3]
Property consolidation in 2015 preceded conservation work in 2016 and hotel reuse. Weathered masonry and marks in timber were selectively retained, while damp and new building services required practical intervention. The result combines visible age with changed occupation.[1] [2] [3]

Shanghai and the world
Part of Wukang Road’s lived history
Wang Yuanhua and Zhang Ke’s residential memory meets today’s hospitality use. Accommodation continues, though a hotel works differently from a family home.[1] [2] [3]
The detailed 2022 account specifies two buildings and four units; a shorter walk article says four houses. This page follows the more precise architectural description.[1] [2] [3]
